The Summer Slide

For those of you who have heard of the Summer Slide, you know just how concerning it can be. The Summer Slide refers to the tendency for students to lose some of the academic skills and knowledge they gained during the school year over the summer break.

Don’t be alarmed! It’s a common phenomenon in the United States, even if not ideal. Many students experience some regression during the summer months due to the extended break from structured learning. However, there are strategies to help mitigate this effect. Engaging in educational activities, reading regularly, and maintaining a routine can help keep skills sharp.

I’m not oblivious—it can be challenging to get your students to sit down and engage in educational activities. Keeping them motivated and focused during the summer months requires creativity and persistence. Finding ways to make learning fun and relevant can make a significant difference.

With that in mind, I’ve linked a few of my interactive ELA lessons below. These lessons serve K-8 students across the board — take a look and see what your student might like!
