Vision Mapping

This is a GREAT activity to get your students back into the swing of things in this new year! This is technically an ESL lesson that can be adapted for different subjects (social studies, ELA, Advisory) whose main purpose is to teach and activate verbs expressing desire. It touches on the history of Martin Luther King Jr. and includes a reading excerpt from the famous “I Have A Dream” speech. It’s perfect for January because 1) Goal Setting; and 2) Martin Luther King Jr. Day baby!!

There are other social-emotional benefits to this lesson. It encourages students to reflect on their desires and goals. Then, it asks them to think critically about what challenges they may face, what supports they have to aid them and to consider what steps they need to take to achieve their goal.

I completed this lesson with one of my ESL students and it led to some meaningful discussions after they completed their vision map.
